Women in Love David Herbert Lawrence 9781537060767 Books

This review pertains to the Penguin Classics edition of 2007, with an intro by Amit Chaudhuri. Amazon is coy as to what text is used; it's the Cambridge edition, removing some changes that DHL apparently made under pressure from his publisher.

The book itself is as good as the 5-star reviews say. Lawrence IMHO went a bit unhinged in the 1920s, but Women in Love, like The Rainbow, is a magnificent novel that captures degrees of feeling most novels appear not to even know exist.

(P.S. - good god, Amazon, we can't review novels any more without your silly "how would you describe the plot of this book?" questionnaire? What idiot vice-president thought that up?)

Women in Love David Herbert Lawrence 9781537060767 Books Reviews

This book is beautifully written. You could randomly pick almost any paragraph and read it and close the book and think to your self "wow, that was beautiful." It tells the story of sisters Gudrun and Brangwen, two young women in England who stand apart from the crowd and struggle with their quirky independence in a classist society.

Of course it isn't a gripper or a page turner. It took me over a year to finish reading this book. That's not to say it's not good-- on the contrary I say it's a testament to how good it is that I ever finished it. How many times have you put a book down for months and then returned to pick it up where you left off? I can think of one other book I did that with, but I did it several times with Women in Love.

It's slow, and in the beginning I couldn't really keep all the characters straight. But it's beautiful and it's hilarious! The langauge of the day, comsbined with the melodrama of Gudrun and Bragwen as they discuss the banal horror of spending the rest of their life with any of the men they know, is both charming and laugh-out-loud funny.

The book works as a period piece; you can see the structured class system of the England of the day nad the sisters who simply don't fit in with anyone.

The book also works as a philosophical piece; at times it reminds me of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. The chapters dedicated to the coal mines and the machine-like endeavors of the men who runs them must have inspired Ayn Rand's work.

This book is deifnitely worth reading, but perhaps best along side another book (or 10).
I was disturbed by the mood swings of the characters, their hyperbolic and sometimes contradictory emotional responses, the sexual ambiguity in some cases.
I did not understand it until I subsequently read The Rainbow. Since I am not a student in an English class I am just reading what I ignored while pursuing a different course of study. It's fun to read these classics when you are well seasoned in the mysteries of life.
Exploring the arousal of interest in another human being and the numerous vulnerabilities one experiences at the onset of a relationship, D.H Lawrence takes his readers on a bumpy ride into the hearts and souls of his heroes. Written in 1920, the book is as true and as fascinating now, almost a hundred years later. From the first couple of pages it swipes a reader off her feet and into the whirling journey of excellent language and attentive descriptions, examining every detail of the bottom of the wast sea of human feelings and thoughts. Studies of the world of nature around the humans add a new fine level to the interconnectedness of all that exists on the pages on the book. Love, friendship, homosexual attraction, creating a family, hate, death, and many more subjects unfold in a variety of patterns, waiting to be discovered anew with every reread of the novel.

I didn't realize this is not a normal-sized book. It is quite large in size, VERY small type. It reminded me of a coloring book. I am not a senior, but even with my reading glasses I had trouble with the print.
DHLawrence is a master of words. He writes with such brilliance..to read one of his novels is to experience every one of the senses.
A masterpiece I have read several times. It portrays modern relationshiips undergoing stress from cultural alienation. Purposeless societies generate purposeless people, who may cling to each other in endlessly dissatisfying ways to escape anomie. Some couples make it, nevertheless. I disregard the philosophies that characterize the dialogs. This is not a book of ideas. It is a book of yearning distracted by philosophies, personal histories, and social vacuousness. What do men and women really want? Undistracted presence. Lawrence book is a ballet of emotions shoving the dancers across the floor, and even off it. We, like they, are caught up in the dance whose purpose is never to arrive. Dance as play.
