THE PRISONWORLD TRILOGY -- VOLUME TWO

Madam Emmeline MacKinsey isn't an old tart. Sure, she runs the most lucrative cathouse in the East End, but she's never spread her legs for money. In fact, the life she led before embarking upon her relatively new vocation as a procuress is a topic that remains largely out of bounds -- much to the consternation of her young lover, Carmen.

Indeed, the more Carmen wants to know, the more evasive Emmeline becomes, and it's not until the unheralded arrival of a past acquaintance threatens to rupture the thin divide between her old life and the one she's taken such great care to build for herself that the secretive bawd is finally forced to confront the ramifications of her duplicity.

Even if that means losing Carmen.
Even if it means facing the rope.

The Procuress is set against the backdrop of dystopian, neo-Victorian London, and features a romantic lesbian relationship at its core.

A great sequel! It deals with a very unlikely love story, and in some ways the role of gender in society. I love Carmen. Can't wait for the third book!

F/F general fiction, F/F romance, erotic sex, dystopian/sci-fi
F/F and M/F "off camera" rape scenes or references of such

I almost didn't read this because book 1 was a weaker story and the love story wasn't at the forefront (I prefer romance to action). I've also only read Telford's lesbian erotica and was kinda taken aback at a lot of the content I found here in her dystopian worlds. Definitely not my usual thing and I struggled to appreciate this side of Telford. But this one zeroed in on Lina and Carmen from start to finish and their love story is the focus of the story. Madam Emmeline MacKinsey ("Lina") is a very well-developed and complex character, and despite her flaws and seemingly corrupted soul, I found myself in love with her long before the story ended.

Set in 24th Century London, a dystopian, neo-Victorian society has evolved. In this society, homosexuality is a serious crime. Book 1 focused on Carmen and the Magistrates (bounty hunters/executioners). In this sequel, the focus is on 42 yr old lesbian Madam Lina and her whorehouse.

There is some disturbing stuff here, mostly in the first part of the novel... but I was still hooked because this is so well-written and engaging (damn you, Telford!). Terrible, terrible things happen to these lead characters or to characters in their midst rape, kidnapping, assault, humiliation, drugging, mugging, molestation, manhandling at the hands of creepy doctors, Russian mobsters, evil Madams, etc etc. I was more than a little mad at Telford in the opening. What a horrible universe! I didn't want to see her crossing some of the lines that she did. Particularly with the Malyshka thread. And in regards to whether or not Madam Lina is a creepy molester. Didn't give it 5 stars as a result because some of it is just tasteless and icky. If you take issue with this type of subject matter, don't read this. Lines get blurred, but there's nothing graphic in this regard. But it's still going to make you uncomfortable.

Though I will emphasize that this is a story about flawed people and out of control corruption... innocence is something that is swallowed up in this dystopian world and incapable of existing-- you have to see that in the bigger picture of it all. Hence, motherhood is a very dark and twisted element here. Above all, it's a fascinating exploration of Lina's psychology.

Okay, all that ugliness aside... there is this whole other more positive storyline. A very erotic one. And it mostly takes over later in the book. The older lascivious blond Lina has bred her slender, dark-haired Carmen to be her one and only since she was 14 (there's a 22 yr age difference between these two). Now at 20/21, Carmen is developing her sexual identity and is learning how to please and take charge. I didn't like Carmen at all in Book 1. I think her characterization kinda ruined that story for me. But in this one I can see Telford's vision of her in the bigger picture-- that she is someone who changes and develops and grows up across the series... and I love it. Carmen still isn't perfect here, but she is much more likable and grows up quite a bit.

The best part of this story for me, of course, is Lina. Definitely one of my favorite lesbian sluts in Telford's smutty little worlds.
I found this a great follow up to The Magistrate. Telford's world building is rich and captivating and her characters are fascinating! I can't wait for the last book!
A great sequel to The Magistrate. I can't wait for the third book to be released.
I love this series! Keira my friend, your awesome! Can't wait to read volume three!! D A must read! 10/10
